Symposium Missa aurea

Laus Polyphoniae, Flanders Festival Antwerp
Sunday, Auguts 18, 2019, 10 am - 3 pm, KU Leuven Campus Carolus, Korte Nieuwstraat 33, Antwerp

The Missa aurea or Golden Mass is sung in honour of the Virgin Mary. The mass focuses particularly on Mary's assent to the Angel Gabriel's message. As part of the Laus Polyphoniae Festival, three different ensembles will proclaim the joyful news on three successive days, with works by Guillaume Du Fay, Johannes Ockeghem and Johannes Regis.

To accompany this Missa aurea Triptych, in which the three ensembles will perform a polyphonic Missa Ecce Ancilla Domini, a symposium exploring the impact of the Annuncation story on the sacred arts of the 15th century will be held. Moderated by Prof. Jennifer Bloxam (Williams College, USA) and with the participation of the singers from Cappella Pratensis, scholars, performers, and music lovers will consider the dramatic presentation of Luke's gospel in liturgical drama, painting, and sacred polyphony in order to place the Missae ancilla domini by Du Fay, Ockeghem and Regis in their larger cultural and religious context. The conversation is intended to pave the way for broader reflections on the way in which the sacred arts of the past can be most meaningfully presented to audiences today.
Admission to the symposium is free, but we kindly ask you to register. Lunch will be provided.
